The Pirate Party Calls for the Total Prevention or Repeal of Bill C-51

The Conservatives and the Liberals have just concluded their bipartisan effort to pass bill C-51. This bill  creates permanent powers similar to martial law and represents a threat to our rights as guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Pirate Party is calling for the full prevention of this crypto-totalitarian bill

The same way that the Liberals and Conservatives have worked together to bring this bill forward, the Pirate Party pledges to work with other parties and MPs who value the privacy and democratic rights of the people they represent over the demands of party leaders.

This bill is already chilling free speech even before the bill has passed. Conservative MP Lawrie Hawn has already began his own brand of ‘McCarthyism’ —  accusing Canadian tech business leaders of profiting from terrorism. His regrettably malicious (or inept) statements include the claim that these leaders are “not aligned with Canadian values.”  Ordinary political dissent is being reframed as support for terrorists. [1] If we are facing a choice between blindly agreeing with the ruling party or being labelled a terrorist, what type of democracy can we have.

We already have ample laws that are focused on the prosecution of terrorism. This bill adds nothing of value to the fight against internationally motivated political violence and legal experts have warned the bill is unconstitutional. [2]

CSIS was created due to the RCMP’s secret intelligence abuses and violations of rights and freedoms. [3] C51 will not only turn back the clock and allow such abuses to return, it will expand powers and make these abuses a permanent and rigid mechanism of Canadian intelligence bureaucracy. Even the infamous U.S. PATRIOT ACT has an expiry and review date. C-51 has no such safeguards. Once it becomes law it will become increasingly hard to reverse.

“Leaked cables from Wikileaks have shown a history of engaging in warrantless surveillance of first nations activists,” said Deputy Leader Shawn Vulliez today, “The real targets of Canadian state surveillance are environmental and first nations political movements, not the terrorist bogeyman that prop up unconstitutional policies such as enhanced interrogation and mass surveillance.”

The Pirate Party calls on other parties to campaign to prevent bill C-51  from passing in the Senate. If the bill passes we call on all Federal parties to make the repeal of C-51 a clear and written part of their official platform for the 2015 election.

Amidst the increasing calls for the abolition of Senate, this is an opportune time for Senators to show their value to Canadians by blocking the bill” said Party Leader Ric Lim, “The Senate can now show Canadians that they are still independent of Ottawa’s partisan games and can function, as they are intended, as a chamber of sobre second thought.

Vancouver – The Pirate Party of Canada is pleased to see the sudden change of leadership in Alberta. Rachel Notley’s NDP has displaced the ruling Progressive Conservative party as the majority government of the province after a seemingly permanent 44 years in power. This is a dramatic step to the left in a province that is traditionally identified as a hotbed of conservatism.

“The NDP have won an encouraging victory tonight,” said Pirate Party Secretary Nate Owen. “But PC Alberta should be congratulated, too, on their hard won 11 seats with 27% of votes. Perhaps the call for proportional representation will get a little more attention – from a variety of parties.”

The Progressive Conservatives would have received more than double their current seats (24) in a proportional representation system.

“The NDP was by the Pirate Party’s closest cousin in this race.” said Pirate Party Candidate Bob Trower, “We’re particularly pleased to see Rachel Notley as incumbent Premier. We need to push harder to get women into leadership positions until there is a reasonable balance.”

Both the federal Pirate Party and the federal NDP have been ardent opposers of the spying Bill C-51.

“This is the power of young, new, and tech-enabled voters coming out to change the face of Canada. The public has never been more informed. ” said Deputy Leader Shawn Vulliez today. “The winds of change have come thanks to the free transfer of information on the internet. Get used to that happening.”

The Pirate Party of Canada is a federal political party dedicated to information policy, the decriminalization of filesharing, and the establishment of a Guaranteed Annual Income for all.

PIRATE PROPOSES A BETTER COPYRIGHT POLICY IN PLACE OF THE NEW EXTENSION

Winnipeg, Manitoba – 2015 April 27

The Government of Canada recently included a copyright extension in their budget. It appears that the goal is to ratify a contentious provision from the secret and controversial Transatlantic Pacific Partnership (TPP) treaty. Leaked versions of the TPP are facing lots of opposition across the world. This extension will effectively keep creative works out of the public domain for 70 years. Inserting the bill into a budget denies Canadians a chance to make an informed decision. The Pirate Party calls for this unnecessary extension to be withdrawn. The party supports shortening the copyright term while preserving the artist’s moral rights and ability to continuously earn income from their work.

“Our government could improve and revitalize our public broadcaster to provide a medium for showcasing independent artist’s works. We could offer the artist a direct-to-artist monetization platform at base cost. Not only will this act as a non-profit launching pad with worldwide marketing reach, it will also give creators a defacto copyright registration without cost.” says Ric Lim, Leader of the Pirate Party. “This is one solution that is better than the old copyright cartel of surrendering the artist’s copyright to a few conglomerates, which is more suitable for an era where production and distribution costs were prohibitive. People want access to the new technological capability of unlimited and realtime access that reflects the new lower cost. Our aim should be to allow greater creative and innovative freedom.”

The copyright monopolists tend to use the few millionaire artists they’ve promoted to claim this ever expanding extension is good for artists. But the larger base of hard working and talented independent artists are not served well by this old model. The Pirate Party is working to fix the increasing abuses in our “intellectual property” laws by plugging the loophole that allows copyright trolls to extort money from Canadians (via threat of unfounded litigation), expanding and clarifying the non-commercial sharing and fair use clauses, and supporting Open Science to benefit all researchers regardless of their background.

The Pirate Party of Canada is a federal political party focused on thoughtful information policy reform, genuine democracy, civil liberties, and the freedom of the Internet. You can find out more online at www.pirateparty.ca .

Swarmwise by Rick Falkvinge{.extern}!

“Swarmwise (2013) is a tactical guide to changing the world using cost-efficient swarm methodology. It is a leadership handbook that outlines how the Swedish Pirate Party was able to beat the political competition on less than one percent of their budget, and shows how any cash- and time-strapped executive or manager can use swarm methodologies, whether the goal is business, social, or political.”
