In light of the urgency of the matter, as well as the number of related motions swamping our December 19th General Meeting (https://www.pirateparty.ca/forum/index.php?topic=562.0), there will be a meeting on the subject open to all party members in our IRC channel (http://www.pirateparty.ca/chat) on Tuesday, December 7 beginning at 8:00 PM EST, and will last for approximately 2 hours. After the meeting, transcripts will be posted online, and telephone and web voting will be available for those who were unable to attend.

Agenda:
• Mikkel Paulson to move that the Pirate Party support in principle the actions of WikiLeaks, maintaining the reservation that personal information should not be needlessly compromised by leaked information
• Travis McCrea to move that the Pirate Party join in protest in support of Wikileaks and Government Transparency on January 15th along side PPAU and other pirate parties
• Joshua Doucet to move to host a mirror for WikiLeaks

Okay, I've added the motion to the draft agenda. I'm leaving it on the end because if we open with WikiLeaks it's likely that we'll get nothing else done.

I propose we move to support Wikileaks and by extension host a Mirror for Wikileaks as described here (http://46.59.1.2/mass-mirror.html).

You don't actually need to second motions in the forum because they haven't been made yet. This is just me compiling an agenda for the meeting. Joshua's motion has already been added to the agenda.

Can we announce our vote and get it recorded before the meeting? In case some of us are most likely unable to make the meeting. Or do you have to be presence in the meeting to make the vote?

Voting on the motions will be available for 7 days after the meeting online (https://vote.pirateparty.ca/ (https://vote.pirateparty.ca/)) and by telephone (1-877-850-PPCA). Results of the motions won't be announced until the end of that voting period.

I propose to include in the statement a paragraph similar to outlined by trailblazer11 in the other topic:
"...It also condemns any government officials from making statement that could be construed as encouraging violence and murder just as it condemns any individual who talks about assassination and utter death threat against a person or government official. It also opposes government harassing and libelling an individual's reputation through unsubstantiated claims and extra legal means."

The actual drafting of press releases will be up to our PR team based on the direction provided at this meeting, but we'll certainly include some mention if the will of the membership is to go ahead with this.

I'm glad the Wikileaks meeting is happening on its own and not during the regular meeting. Something tells me it would wipe out the other issues to be discussed at the GM.

I checked the link, but noticed I was never given a PIN when I joined the party, only a member ID on my receipt. Is this normal?

Depends when you joined. If you joined before about 6 months ago, you would have received a second email with the PIN.

About two weeks ago. Do I have to be a member for a certain amount of time before I can vote?

Nope the only time constraint is you need to have been here 3 months to become a candidate in an election.

I received the email about the vote, but when I went to login, the page said that there was currently no vote.

I got the same just now -- it is especially important to get this going when the voting period has been shortened.

also the emails gave instructions for finding the transcripts and minutes, but no instructions for where to vote; it was only through TinyCuts here that I was reminded to go to the vote.pirateparty.ca hostname -- I think the link could be included in the emails as a courtesy, or perhaps posted to the footer of the chat page.

I can certify that voting reciepts from the election are being entered into the system, and that I have destroyed any trace of the vote on my part.

We will be discussing how best to proceed based on this overwhelmingly-positive mandate at the Federal Council meeting (https://www.pirateparty.ca/forum/index.php?topic=600.0) on Monday. It bears noting that the voter turnout at this meeting was an unprecedented 497, with the previous record being 166 for the leadership election in August.

Looks like a solid volume of support. I'm interested to see how the Federal council acts but would like to see some more structured (and possibly legally robust) wording on the party platform.

My opinion on the use of "needlessly" stands that it is too ambiguous of a term.

With the further information that has come to light even since our Dec 7th meeting, two of which being http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/12/07/wikileaks/index.html (http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/12/07/wikileaks/index.html) on the disinformation that abounds and also Assange's own Op-Ed piece on http://blogs.theaustralian.news.com.au/mediadiary/index.php (http://blogs.theaustralian.news.com.au/mediadiary/index.php) I think the Federal Council will be quite assured that all the concerns raised about privacy and the legality of the postings are in fact non-concerns.  Assange does indeed vet these posts for personal exposures and other journalistic constraints, and in most cases he isn't even the first to post the cables, they are carried out by his media partners first  and then archived by the wikileaks mirrors.

Which is a good thing too because, as it turns out, there are cases of mainstream media misrepresenting the content of the cables and then failing to make the original available (see http://www.blather.net/zeitgeist/archives/2010/12/selective_publishing_of_wikile.html (http://www.blather.net/zeitgeist/archives/2010/12/selective_publishing_of_wikile.html)) which is of itself a very good reason in support of keeping the originals openly accessible online.

Awesome! Everyone deserves a pat on the back for participating, I'm so glad to see the amount of support wikileaks has in our party, they really are doing great work.

If you do a press release you might want to mention that this decision was the results of a vote including all members of the party in order to point out how the democratic process works in this party.
